Break The Silence - What does this mean?
So....
....we've called the album 'Break The Silence'. We love the title and are pumped about the tunes. There's a reason why we gave it this title:
There’s just some sort of frustration in me that we are all colluding in some sort of silent code of behaviour that goes round and round in the same old cycles and patterns. We dress the same, speak the same, do the same, be the same and we are so scared of doing anything different that may break the silence that surrounds us. I sometimes look at us, the family of Christ, the passionate, compassionate body who are urged to relentlessly pursue the life of our selfless Saviour and I see a group of people that seem silent and only every now and then have the courage to raise their heads above the turret.
It’s like we’ve all colluded to remain silent in our inaction and apathy. As long as we all remain silent and say nothing, then it’s OK and we feel safe and our guilt subsides, our conscience shrinks. We all simply ‘keep the peace’ in our desire not to rock the boat. And when someone does break the silence, we quickly scapegoat, discourage or gossip about them in order to force them to collude with us again and maintain the status quo.
Is this God’s plan for us – for you? No it’s not. What do you want in this life? What has Christ called you to? In your wildest dreams, who is he asking you to be? In this country, as you live in a segregated, broken, angry society, who is God asking you to be? Is He wanting you to remain silent, hidden, mediocre and simply tread water through life until you run out of energy and drown? Or is He asking you to relentlessly pursue him regardless of what everyone else is or isnt doing? My hunch is that He wants you to break the silence.
When we witness another person in our community being abused because of their religion, sexuality, ability or their skin colour what do we do about it – remain silent?! When we feel our own anger and prejudice stir toward another human who God created and loves because of their religion, what do we say? When we notice another persons rights being exploited what do we say?
He wants us to break the silence. And He doesn’t just want us to break it with a wee whisper or a squeak - He wants us to break it with a yell that comes right from the holy depths of our beings – a yell that leaves us hoarse and the people around us slightly deaf and shaken. A yell that commands the walls to tumble down. A yell that demands a response from the people around us to either join us in action or remain motionless. Where is our yell? We need to break the silence. Where is our shout? Where is our noise? Where is our voice?
I'm fed up being too quiet. I wanna be louder.
