Weddings do my heart good...
Yo Brethern!
How are ye?
Summer. Weddings. Lots of them.
As I said in a previous post, I've been at 3 in the last 2 weeks. Tim and Claire, David and Claire and Andy and Louise....it's all happening! Enough to make a single person of a certain age feel like there's something wrong with them.
All the weddings were great - very personal and at times, moving. I know I said in the previous post that I'd mark them and let you know which one was best but...on hindsight, I think that was a bit of a premature comment! (I'm afraid to say something controversial and be thumped by an angry ex-friend).
Anyway, why am I typing this post? What am I trying to say? Well...I think I just want to share how challenged and moved I was during some of the speeches at the weddings. Most wedding speeches tend to be fairly mundane however some of the recent speeches I witnessed had some great heart-felt moments (aswell as a couple of half-decent jokes). Maybe it's cos I am a bloke, a Dad and a son but the speeches made from Dads' to sons and vice versa were great. I am a bit of a tearful chap at the best of times and during these speeches, I shed a few wee tears. I can't help it and I know The Cure sing "Boys Don't Cry" but I just went for it.
It made me come away thinking that I want to be a really encouraging, generous, loving Dad. I'd love to be at my sons' weddings and be able to genuinely say something to them from the context of really good, strong relationships...something that affirms them and strengthens their courage. At the same time, I don't want to just say those sorts of things as a one-off at a wedding...I wanna remind my sons regularly of my love for them. At the moment this is easy but when they get bigger and become spotty teenagers, I'm sure it'll be tougher.
Weddings are good. Sometimes the music isn't great and your relatives can be embarrassing but it's so refreshing and inspiring to hear people speak from their hearts in public about their love for eachother. More of it! Particularly from the fellas! It does my heart good.
Over and out.
Johnny
